My passion for anything boating and fishing was inevitable; I grew up on a small island in the southern part of the Netherlands. I followed my dream to become a yacht designer by studying Naval Architecture at the University of Rotterdam. Right out of college, at the age of 23, I packed my suitcase and moved to the USA. After 3 years in Tennessee (not really known for anything to do with sport fishing), I moved to South Florida in 1999 and scored a position as the in-house Naval Architect at Rybovich Spencer. Working directly for Gary Hilliard, who was the head builder there, I learned everything about sport fishing boats and the industry. Gary had originally been hired by Mike Matlack who used to be the yard manager there (before he created Gamefisherman). Gary was instrumental in the way I approach designs and construction methods. When the yard was sold to the Huizinga family in 2004, I left to start my own design firm, EG Designs.
The following years, I designed for Michael Rybovich, Gamefisherman, Garlington, Release Boatworks, and other custom sportfish builders. I believe that the wide ranging exposure with different builders over a period of almost 20 years has given me a unique set of tools and insight. From working with some of the center console builders in Miami, to being involved with the interior design of a 285 ft Derecktor built motor yacht, the experience has been amazing.
Fast forward to recent times, I now design boats for Gamefisherman and partner company, Release Boatworks. I’m proud to pass this legendary company along to the next generation of boat builders to continue the Gamefisherman legacy.
Just like chasing the ultimate catch, timing is everything….
